The interpretation of the play

The interpretation of the piece Bent in the context of discrimination in Serbia today is, in every sense, but especially in art, a highly sensitive task. This piece caused some controversy more than thirty years ago, and meanwhile it has been reproduced and filmed many times. The question is, what another production of Bent would bring…

In this sense, the directorial concept of Andrej Nosov offers a possible solution. Transferring the story about the suffering of homosexuals in Nazi concentration camps in the 1930’s of the last century and into the story of life in the ‘modern camp’ – their position in Serbia today, harassment and problems faced by the inability to live freely, and the closure of the four walls is an interesting solution. On the one hand, it emphasizes the universality of hatred towards homosexuals of all retrograde ideologies. On the other hand, it is very delicate task for authors: to avoid the banality and false analogies and try to make a play that, in addition to its obvious political engagement, reaches out to the public and to one other, much more intimate level.
